First off, I need to apologize for not putting out a newsletter in so long. The last one I sent out was in April. As I’m sure you experience, life can get so busy. But I’ve also been realizing that there are so many ways that we already keep in touch that maybe it doesn’t make sense for me to continue doing a newsletter.

When things finally calmed down for me in August, I started to think about putting together a newsletter. I wanted to tell you all of the news that classmates had sent me in the meantime. Only you know what? There wasn't much! Which was funny, because on Facebook, I'm always seeing things that people post about their jobs or their vacations or kids or grandkids or hobbies or their health and so forth.

And that's when it hit me: this newsletter might not be necessary anymore. The idea of the newsletter was to try to help classmates share their lives with other classmates, and help us keep up with what's going on for everyone. But people keep in touch now in so many ways, that a newsletter seems kind of unnecessary. So I will be stopping putting one together. I have enjoyed doing this, but the fun part, actually, is staying connected. So, since we can do that in other ways, I think that it doesn’t make sense to continue.

I will definitely continue to keep track of classmate whereabouts. I will definitely do my part for any future reunions or milestone birthday parties (2016?!). And I will definitely pass along any news I come across -- on our Facebook page.

Thank you for all the news you've shared. Thank you for all the classmate sightings you've let me know about. Thank you for all the thank yous!

Take care!

I give up. Where did March go? I had the best of intentions of getting a newsletter out in March, but something kept coming up. Work. Avoiding work. Shoveling – still! Something. Always something.
I guess the biggest something was that my daughter went to Arizona for a week on an alternative spring break. She and 10 kids from her college worked at a homeless center there, and stayed at the staff’s group home. She loved it. Didn’t want to come home. Got to see the Grand Canyon, too, which is on my bucket list. A wonderful experience for her.
But a reminder for me. You see, in August she’s going to Denver for 11 months. She’s going to be volunteering at a school for underprivileged kids there, and living in a group home with other recent grads who are also volunteers in the area. 11 months. My little girl. I’m not sure what this is going to be like. I’m not sure how well I’m going to sleep for 11 months with my daughter 1,981 miles away. I’m hoping it’s going to be great for her.
But you know what it means if it is.

Some sad news. Classmate Jimmy Wall died in February. His obituary is here:
http://www.lincolnfuneralhome.org/obituaries/obit_view.php?id=540
As always, please share any remembrances of Jimmy.
Condolences to his family and friends.

Mr. Kenneth Leshner, a long-time teacher and coach at Cranston East, died recently. Here’s his obituary:
The numbers haven’t changed at all since last time. We still think we know the whereabouts of about 672 of our classmates. Let me know if you get some new contact information.

Cosima Fallon is very proud of her older brother, Dave Fallon. “A current news anchor/reporter and afternoon host with RI public radio station WRNI is being inducted into the RI Radio Hall of fame on May 8th at Twin River. A 46 year news career includes 20 years in Boston Radio and 20 years in Providence Radio, including WPRO, WEAN, WPJB and several in Boston and Hartford. Fallon is also a former director of the RI General Assembly's Legislative Press bureau.”
David Fowler continues to prepare to run the Boston Marathon again this year, as a fundraiser for his son’s foundation. He writes great blogs about his training here:
http://speakerscorner-dave.blogspot.com/

I’m probably the only classmate who doesn’t run into Gene Blair at Twin Oaks. Luckily, he lets me know what’s going on with him through email. “Things are well here. Our 2 boys are married, homeowners, and parents now. Nicholas is a programmer and a producer at channel 12, after being a program manager at WPRO radio for many years. He and his wife have an 18-month-old son. Our younger son Joseph is a Phys Ed teacher and football and basketball coach at Mount Pleasant High. He and his wife (also a teacher, at Matunuck Elementary) have a 5-month-old baby girl. The house does seem empty but when the grandkids show up I feel like I'm 30 years old again. My wife Joanne and I recently traveled to Italy with friends and family, including Napoli, Amalfi, Sorrento, Pompeii, Florence, and Rome, where we saw Pope Francis. Then on to Monaco, St. Tropez, Barcelona, and Madrid. One notch off the Bucket List!”

Carol Safford DeBeradinis is celebrating the recent birth of her new granddaughter, Lily Paige. Lily was born on February 18th and is beautiful and healthy.
Question: what was your FAVORITE vacation, and what made it so?

Going to see the Red Sox Monday night. Yes, I’m wearing snow gear.

See you next month.
I don’t know why
it takes me so long to get these updates out each month. They have a similar
pattern every time: a witty and insightful opening, review of the numbers,
whatever news classmates have seen fit to forward to me, an appeal for contact
information, and a graceful exit into the wings. I don’t know what the holdup
is, but this month I’m going to blame snow.

Snow, snow, snow, snow, snow! Mind you,
there’s a lot I like about snow. I like watching it come down, so quiet and
graceful. I like how pretty it makes everything look, hiding all the ordinary
crud. I like how it sparkles in the sunlight. But this year, it’s all just been
too much. Every time it snows, all I think is, Here are another couple of hours
I need to spend clearing the steps and driveway, plus all the extra time
commuting. And I’m not even getting the skiing enjoyment I used to get. It
seems like whenever there’s snow on the ground, it’s way too cold for skiing to
be enjoyable, and whenever it’s warm enough to ski without turning into a
popsicle, the snow is gone – or I’m at work.

The holidays were a lot of fun, but in a slightly different key this year:

* My son now lives with his girlfriend in their own apartment in a different town, so this is the first year he wasn’t actually home on Christmas morning with us. He and his girlfriend came over later in the morning.

* At a neighbor’s house party that my daughter usually doesn’t go to, she came and spent the evening reconnecting with her high school friends.

* At my sister’s house on Christmas day, we spent a lot of time discussing the upcoming wedding of my nephew and his fiancée.

I sense that a torch is slowly being passed here. It won’t be too long before the next generation is hosting Christmas at their homes. I won’t be one of the main planners and providers of the holidays any more: I’ll be the guy bringing the applesauce.

But here’s the thing: I’m not ready to pass any torches yet. I like this torch. I’m hanging onto my torch. I’ll let you know when I’m done with this torch, thank you very much. Until then, hands off.

Sad news: Classmate Gary Holt died at the end of December. Gary is one of those classmates I got reintroduced to on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/gary.s.holt?fref=ts). I always enjoyed hearing about all the movies he got to act as an extra in, and sparring with him on our differing political views. I’m going to miss that. As usual, please contribute your own memories of Gary for us to share.

Here’s the obituary:

Condolences to Louis Pullano, whose mother-in-law died recently.

We now are under the delusion that we know the whereabouts of 672 of our classmates, which isn’t bad after 43 years!

However, of those 627 classmates, we know only about 300 email addresses. I’m trying to expand the number of people who receive these updates by email. If you have any email addresses of classmates, please let me know. I will send them a tasteful message asking if they’d like to receive the updates. If they don’t, I’ll just mark them Private, as I already do with about a dozen others. Thanks!

Classmate Bill Dube, who we usually hear about building and racing electric vehicles, also has a day job: testing air quality for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Recently, Bill traveled to Hong Kong for a month. “I'm collaborating with the folks at Hong Kong Polytechnical University on some air quality measurements. The hospitality of the Hong Kong people has been wonderful. Here is me in a group photo with the PLA (Peoples Liberation Army) general that commands the Army radar station that we are using for a measurement site. Several of the HK atmospheric scientists surround me.”

Gail Glen Whitfield shared her remembrance of Mr. Clegg: “I had him in 10th and 11th grade. When I was a senior, I wrote him a letter telling him what a good teacher he was, and thanked him for his tutelage. I never knew what a good college athlete he was.”

I received a message from classmate Dave Lanni several months ago, and I apologize for not sharing it sooner:

“Just to let you that, since I live in the Detroit area, I attended a Sox/Tigers playoff game. There were many Red Sox Fans walking around the stadium with beards. It is nice to see the support for Red Sox Nation at Comerica Park in Detroit. Overall, many Detroiters were rooting for the Sox in the World Series!! Can't wait for next year!”

Thanksgiving this year – which seems like a lifetime ago – was different from most years. Usually, my family and my sister’s family go to my brother’s family’s house in Newton. This year, my sister and her family were going to her in-laws’. And my son’s girlfriend is severely allergic to my brother’s 2 cats. Bottom line, we hosted Thanksgiving at my house. It was a very casual meal. I think we actually forgot one of the vegetable dishes in the warmer.

What I remember most was what I felt thankful for that day. Not my health, which fortunately is good. Not for our material possessions, with which we are blessed. Not for my job, which I know I’m lucky to have. It was the people. I was so thankful for my wife and daughter and son and son’s girlfriend. For my brother, his wife, and daughter. My sister, her husband, and 3 sons. My mother. My other family. My friends from work, school, town, church, college, high school, and, yes, Facebook. Bottom line, it’s the people who are most important in my life.

I was reminded of that feeling after the very sad events of the last few weeks. It’s terrific that we can have each other for the good times: the parties, the celebrations. But it’s even more important that we have each other for the hard times, the sad times.

Sad news. Classmate Richard McGovern, husband of classmate Jean Colaneri-McGovern, died on December 4. Our condolences to Jean, their children and grandchildren, and family and friends.

More sad news. Classmate Michael Mizer died on December 6. Our condolences to his children, granddaughter, and family and friends.

And more. Gary McKenney, brother of classmate Gail McKenney Marsigliano, died in October. Our condolences to Gail and her family and friends.

And still more. Judy Carcieri, sister of classmate Linda Carcieri, died in November. Our condolences to Linda and her family and friends.

And even more. Michelle Aquilante, daughter-in-law of classmate Donald Aquilante, died in November. Our condolences to Donald, his son, and grandson.

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/providence/obituary.aspx?n=michelle-aquilante&pid=168004420

And finally. CHSE math teacher and basketball coach Alvin Clegg died in November. Our condolences to his family and friends.

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/providence/obituary.aspx?n=alvin-clegg&pid=168004431

So many passings are hard to hear about. Please reach out to the people involved. And, as always, please share your memories and connections with each other here.

I also hear happy things from classmates, of course. Grandchildren being born, special vacations taken, personal and professional accomplishments. But I don’t feel quite right about including them right now. Does that make sense? I’ll pick up here next month.

For now, let’s treasure the people in our lives. Take care of each other. And let’s connect again in the new year.

Happy Christmas!

Best wishes in the New Year!

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">My
mouth is still hanging open in stunned surprise that the Red Sox have won the
World Series. Through this whole season – every win, every walk-off, every time
they took or hung onto the lead in their division – my reaction was always:
*these* guys? Really? *These* guys? Not a team of superstars, by any means.
Definitely more than the sum of their parts.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">You
know, there was a time when I felt that following sports was a pointless and even
frivolous waste of time, but I changed my mind about that some years ago. Because
life is hard. Even when life is pretty easy, it’s hard. And sometimes it’s very
hard. We *need* diversions from life sometimes, whether they’re funny cat
pictures or Facebook discussions of superhero movies – or the wacky escapades
of the Boston Red Sox. These things can take our minds off of life for a while.
They are rescuing. They are restoring. They are blessings.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">I know
that people in the Boston area are walking with a lighter step these days.
There are more smiles, more handshakes, more backslaps. Of course, winning the
World Series doesn’t fix everything or change everything. But it helps. It
really does.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Go Sox!

Nancy (Goldis) Iacono recently took a trip to San Jose, Costa Rica. “It is
indeed a land of beauty with warm, welcoming people. This is Nancy's second
trip here. We also traveled with two couples that we met during our trip to
Turkey last year at this time. They are from Minnesota. They arrived at our
house a couple of days before the trip to check out our beautiful state of RI
and then we spent a day in Boston before flying here. We have a long day of
travel ahead of us today, but will be glad to return to RI. I have been able to
keep tabs on the Red Sox and saw most of their 2 wins vs. the Rays.”

I wanted to tell you all about my camping vacation in a state park on Cape Cod in July: the scent of the pine woods, the peaceful quiet of the forest, the days sitting in the summer sunshine reading, watching adventurous birds and little creatures up close at our campsite, the occasional walks to the lake for a lazy swim, and the crackle and glow of the campfire at night.
But I couldn’t because we got totally rained out by a horrendous thunderstorm on our very first night: the tent battered by winds and completely soaked through, the sleeping bags a soggy swamp, our dining canopy crushed and blown into the bushes, half our gear washed away. It was like trying to camp under a waterfall. We gave up, packed hurriedly, and retreated home. I read in the back yard. We went out to eat. We saw a couple of movies. It wasn’t the same as what we’d been planning for six months.
That’s why Ellie and I went back to the Cape a couple of weekends ago. We stayed in a hotel with floor, roof, walls, and beds. When we walked out our door, we were right on the beach. The weather was gorgeous, sunny and mild the whole long weekend. The summer crowds were gone, so there were no lines for restaurants. We walked along the beach, drowsed on chaise lounges, and relaxed.
Sometimes you have to persist to get to the happy ending.

So, sorry I missed August and September. Real life intrudes sometimes.

The number of classmates we think we know the whereabouts of has dropped to 671. This happens whenever we have a reunion, because we find out that a lot of the addresses we had were wrong. It’s actually going to get worse than this, because I haven’t gone through all the returned invitations yet. So it goes. As always, if you get any contact info on a classmate, please pass it along.

CHSE science teacher Mr. Martucci died recently. Condolences to friends, family, and students:

Two memorial concerts for Ronnie Stabile were performed at URI at the end of September. I wonder if anyone could report on either of those?

Bill Dube and his wife Eva continue to set speed records for electric vehicles. Here’s a video of Eva doing a couple hundred mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjaOiO0fkiM

I don’t have a lot of news other than that. A lot of people post news on Facebook – new grandchildren, weddings, and so forth – and I’m realizing that I probably should keep track of those items here for those who aren’t on Facebook.
Which brings up a related question: if you aren’t on Facebook, why not? You can have an absolute minimum private presence there, and still be able to enjoy what goes on. Come on, all the cool kids are doing it! And me, too.

We have lots of ways to keep in touch online, now. For example, we have a web site:
www.chse1971.com
(thanks to Ernie Sutcliffe for starting and maintaining)
and wiki:
https://chse1971.wikispaces.com/
And, by the way, I post these updates online at http://chse1971.blogspot.com/.

Let us know what’s going on in your life. I personally am thinking of joining a new rock-climbing gym in my town, so next month I may be able to tell you all about what the emergency room is like.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Why,
yes, we did have a 60th birthday party for the entire CHSE class of
1971 a few weeks ago! It was in the Stage Door restaurant, which is part of the
newly renovated Park Theatre, right across the street from Cranston City Hall.
A great location, with a nice bar area in front, and lounge area with dance
floor inside. It was a beautiful summer night, and about 120 classmates and
guests turned out to party and catch up on their friendships.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">As
always when attending one of these reunions, my goal was to meet old friends
and make new friends. I always see plenty of people I knew in the day and, in a
class of 720, where it’s impossible to have known everybody, I also get to meet
and hang out with people I’ve never met before. I talked to all kinds of
classmates about all kinds of things, including retiring and starting new jobs,
kids and kids’ kids, caring for or grieving parents, dealing with ailments
minor and major, and discovering and rediscovering faith. People laughed,
talked, ate, showed and took pictures, and danced. We keep moving forwards, and
it’s inspiring to be part of such a great group of people.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">These
events don’t just happen. You would not believe all the work that has to go on
behind the scenes. There were hundreds of emails exchanged during the year
before the big night. All of this effort is led by Dan Barry. I am constantly
reminded how lucky we are to have such an active class president. I know other
CHSE classes whose presidents are MIA, but Dan is always front and center
making things happen. This time around, Paul Verduchi did a ton of work,
including finding and negotiating the place we actually used, creating a web
site and online payment system for the party, printing and mailing ALL the
invitations, getting all those birthday cupcakes made, and finding a
last-minute DJ when the scheduled one fell off the earth. Pat Giarrusso handled
all the money once again. Ernie Rheaume managed all the checks. Many people,
including Dale Waterman Bonanno, Cosima Fallon, Linda DiMuccio Pontarelli, Juliana
Pastine Reilly, Pat Dewey Giarrusso, and Susan Rotella, called missing
classmates. Several people, including Pat Dewey Giarrusso, Carol Myron, and Cosima
Fallon checked people in. Contrary to popular belief, my role in this was very
small: sending emails and keeping lists. Please take the time to thank these
people, without whom, literally, this party never would have happened.

not going to give the usual monthly count of numbers of classmates this time. I’ve
just been handed the 89 invitations that were returned because the addresses are

project is to provide shore power stations for the container ships, so that
when the ships are at the dock being unloaded or loaded, they will no longer
run their diesel engines, which are extremely dirty. Having the shore power up
and working will be the equivalent of taking 33,000 cars off the road every
day.” Cool work!

Illness sucks. My wife has had stomach aches for almost 4 months now. She’s over the original problem – a “minor” infection – but she’s still trying to get her digestion back on track. She’s had to totally change what she eats, when she eats, and how much she eats – and she still feels crumby even after all her precautions.
As for myself, I have a leaky mitral valve and, even on my best days, my right eye sees the world as if looking through crinkly cellophane.
But you know what I’m talking about. Many of you or your loved ones have far worse issues that you’ve been dealing with for far longer. We’re all getting older, last time I checked, and we’re accumulating issues as we go. It’s kind of inevitable.
What isn’t inevitable is how we choose to spend our time DESPITE what we might be dealing with. Despite feeling lousy all the time, Ellie still somehow managed to look for jobs and interview for one, which she got and which she loves. I might have a defective heart valve, but I was still able to help haul tables and other paraphernalia around for 6 hours on Saturday at my church’s community day. And whatever our classmates are dealing with, I’m sure they’re giving it their best shot at getting the most out of life despite what’s going on.
Let’s all hang in there and be there for each other, as we always are.

Our numbers have changed for the better. We now believe we know the whereabouts of 702 classmates, a new maximum. Yay us! That belief is about to be sorely tested as we try to contact everyone for the upcoming party (see below). It’s always interesting to see how many people have moved or changed their phone number or email address. It’s almost as if notifying me ISN’T the most important thing they have to do. :)

Condolences to Paula deCaro, whose mother died recently.

Condolences to David Fowler, whose brother Niles died recently.
Tom Iacono remembers Niles as “one of the funniest guys I knew in high school,” which I can second.

Condolences to Pat Giarrusso, whose mother died in February.

Condolences to Mike Bellotti, whose father died in March.

Condolences to Nancy Hunter Diodati, whose husband died in January.

We learned that Miss Bressler, who taught girls physical education during our time, died recently.

David Fowler successfully completed another Boston Marathon to benefit the foundation he’s set up in his son’s memory:
https://www.facebook.com/HelpInTheNickOfTime
Luckily, Dave was unhurt in the bombing at the marathon. He’s written about his experiences here:
http://speakerscorner-dave.blogspot.com/
By the way, Dave’s son in law, Marshall Lewy, is a film director. His latest film is called “California Solo” and was released in November. It’s available on Netflix and On Demand.
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/california_solo/

Roberta Martellucci was happy to see Dean Bengtson mentioned in his role as a missionary in Japan. “Because of Facebook, Dean and I can communicate with one another.” Roberta herself has been playing guitar, singing, and teaching in orphanages for more than 25 years.

John Kennedy has this remembrance of classmate Marc Plante, who died recently:
“I am taken aback by the death of Marc Plante. Marc and I played a lot of hoops together and were teammates at Park View. I even played on a summer league team in East Greenwich with his older brother Freddy, who is one of the great schoolyard legends of RI hoops. Freddy beat out Ernie D. for the MVP award in the N. Providence League in consecutive summers.”

Philip Winsor sent a list of the many kinds of jobs he’s had: USMC electronics tech, manufacturing aluminum windows, forklift driver, bronze caster and moldmaker at Gorham’s, house painter, carpenter, furniture moving, getaway driver (just checking to see if we’re reading), gambler, home and business maintenance, bouncer, ski instructor at Killington, truck driver, plumber, electrician, heavy equipment operator, bartender, bookkeeper, gun dealer, and accountant. Phil has been married for 28 years and has two daughters, one of whom helps out with his accounting business. His hobbies include rowing, biking, camping, and guitar. He hasn’t slowed down since hip replacement surgery in January.

Cosima Fallon brags about her brother, well-known radio broadcaster Dave Fallon. “April 1st, 2013 was his 45th year in radio. He started out at the age of 18 on PRO-FM, then went on to PRO-AM, WEAN, and WBZ. He is now at RI NPR- RI Public Radio as afternoon host, news anchor, producer, and editor. You can tell I am proud of him!”

Must brag! My daughter Katie McConnaughy won a Leadership Award at Stonehill College this semester, where she’s a junior. This year, she served as a student minister (kinda like an RA) in her dorm. This summer, she’s doing an internship at the My Brother’s Keeper charity in Easton, MA. In the fall, she’ll be an RA in the dorms.

Did someone mention a party? Oh, right! You are invited to a 60th Birthday Party for the entire Class of 1971! Saturday, June 22, 2013 at the Stagedoor Restaurant at the Park Theatre in Cranston. All the details are here:
http://www.chse60th.com/
This will be our first class get-together in Cranston and should be a lot of fun!
Dan Barry initiated this effort and has been tireless behind the scenes, reviewing venues and making the decisions and commitments necessary to make this party happen. Pat Giarrusso and Ernie Rheaume are handling the money. Paul Verduchi created that web site and all the technical wizardry behind it, and has put a lot of effort into the planning.
We could use help in several areas, such as making phone calls to contact classmates. If you can help out, please let me know.

We have lots of ways to keep in touch online, now. For example, we have a web site:
www.chse1971.com
(thanks to Ernie Sutcliffe for starting and maintaining)
and Facebook group:
http://www.facebook.com/reqs.php#/group.php?gid=51722469479
and a Facebook event for the last Reunion:
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=192240297471327
Check out one or more of these easy ways to see what people are up to.
And, by the way, I post these updates online at http://chse1971.blogspot.com/.

That’s about it for me. Enjoy spring!
Iacono shared this tribute to classmate Marc Plante, who died recently:

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">“I
don’t know if you knew Marc, but he was my childhood friend. His parents and
mine were good friends. Marc and I were born 2 weeks apart, so we spent time
together from when we were babies and went to the same schools together from
pre-K through high school. During the high school years, we drifted apart as
often happens and I have not seen or spoken to Marc since high school. But the
memories have stayed with me. I spent more time with Marc than any other kid
growing up. We were always at each other’s homes. We served as altar boys
together. If I had a dollar for every one-on-one basketball game we played, I
wouldn’t be worrying about my son’s upcoming college expenses. Marc was a quiet
kid, but I think that those that knew him know how funny he could be and what a
good kid he was. By all indications, he was a fine adult too. Even though we
have not had contact for years, it is sad when someone you were once so close
to passes on. Here’s to his memory.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">We
do have a little good news. David Lanni is proud to report that his brother,

for the City of Cranston and was also elected City Council President.
Congratulations!

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">David
Fowler is once again training for this year’s Boston Marathon, and he is once
more blogging about his progress. You can read his always-fun and
thought-provoking column here:

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Dave
runs each year partly as a fundraiser for the foundation he started in his son’s
memory. You can read about that here:

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Speaking
of running – wait, this involves a little more complicated introduction. In the
position I have, hearing about everyone’s news and activities, I’m starting to
notice different clusters of interests among our classmates. I want to start
writing about these common interests as I notice them. Please chip in with your
own observations. We have a lot in common that we might not know about.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">For
example, I know that Jakki Kougasian Horan and I share the same current
profession: we’re both technical writers. In fact, because we both live in the
Boston area, we routinely swap job leads as needed.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">And,
speaking of running, I know that there are a few serious runners among us,
including David Fowler, Mary Caldarola-Smith, and John Kennedy.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">I
believe I have already mentioned in the past that our class also has a number
of clergy, including Dianne Saffron Dugan (minister), Dean Bengtson (minister, in
Japan), Jacob Adler (rabbi, Temple Shalom of Northwest Arkansas), and Alan
Mittleman (rabbi and director of the Tikvah Institute for Jewish Thought at the
Jewish Theological Seminary of America).

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Lots
of current and former teachers, including Linda Gronneberg Gaulin, Lauren Goding
Johnson, Jean Colaneri, Debra Donnelly Cronin, Mary Caldarola-Smith, and Ronnie
Stabile.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">I
know I’m missing some people – and some interests like musicians and artists.
Help me fill in the blanks here. What do you know you have in common with other
classmates?

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">We
are still thinking about the possibility of a “We’re 60!” party sometime this
year. Still trying to sort out possible venues and dates.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">We
have lots of ways to keep in touch online, now. For example, we have a web
site:

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">For
a number of years during my career, I’ve worked as a consultant or contractor,
meaning hourly pay, no benefits, and no paid vacation. That’s why it’s so
wonderful to be an employee again, with actual paid holidays and actual paid
vacation. The ability to take time off work without impoverishing my family is fantastic.
I thoroughly enjoyed taking some time between Christmas and New Year’s.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Not
that I did anything special. Oh, I had a list of fun things to do during my
time off. Saw some movies. Hosted a game night with some friends. Went to some
parties. But a nasty cold put me in bed for a few days. Maybe you’ve had the
same experience I do: you kind of mentally keep yourself going for work and obligations
and holidays and special events, but when those things are done: crash! Something
inside of you says, “That’s it. The important stuff is done. Time to shut down
for a while.”

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Then
again, maybe sleeping was the best way to spend my time. On work days, I’m up
by 5:30 every morning. The luxury of sleeping until 8 or 9 was nice. Sometimes
the best thing you can do is not to do anything.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Some
new people may be reading this month’s update. Due to an error on my part that
I can’t even explain, I don’t think I’ve been using the right email addresses
for some people. Hopefully, that has changed. Welcome to the party!

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Our

on some people, thanks to straightening out those email addresses. We still
believe we know the whereabouts of about 699 of our classmates. Not bad after
40 years! If you’re in touch with any classmates, please pass along their
contact information. Every bit helps.

of a lot I can do about it. I’m a nervous spectator. All I can do is watch and

Kougasian Horan has lots of family goodness to report. Her oldest daughter,
Victoria, passed the MA and NH Bar Exams in October, all without taking a Bar
prep course, and also while holding down a full-time job in a law firm as both
receptionist and paralegal. Victoria also worked at the same full-time job for
the entire time she attended law school full-time in the evening. Victoria and
her husband George have custody of George's children, Dominic (11) and Jada
(7).

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Jakki’s

with an AS in Early Childhood Education. While Corie is looking for a job in a
daycare center or as a nanny, she is working at Marshall's.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Jakki’s

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">I
have two items to report myself. My son James now has a full-time job at the
Boston Museum of Science. He was a volunteer there for more than a year, then a
part-time employee for another year. He is now a guide at many of the special
exhibits (such as the Underwater Treasure and the Mastodon exhibits there now),
and helps run school trips to the museum. He loves his work and loves living in
Boston.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">My
daughter Katie is a junior at Stonehill College, majoring in psychology and
communication. This year, she is also a Student Minister in her dorm. This is
something like an RA: she helps kids out, and they can come to her with
problems. She’s a junior on a floor with 28 freshman girls, so it’s like having
28 little sisters. She’s enjoying it a lot. She also volunteers 2 or 3 days a
week at My Brother’s Keeper, an organization near Stonehill that delivers food
and furniture to folks in need in southeast Massachusetts.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">I
think I’ve mentioned a few thousand times before that my son James graduated
from BU in May. In September, I helped him move from his former apartment in
Brookline to his new apartment in Allston. Of course, every other
apartment-dweller in Brookline and Allston was also changing apartments on the
same day. I have never seen traffic like this in my life outside of concerts or
sports. Rental vans and trucks everywhere (including ours, of course). Also,
about 98 degrees in the shade, and no shade. When we actually were able to
reach his building, it didn’t take very long to schlep his stuff up to the
third floor, and I was pretty glad to be done with the whole process.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">I
have mixed feelings about all this. On the one hand, I’m very proud of him for
landing jobs and finding an apartment and roommates. He’s a very responsible
kid, and he does a good job of taking care of himself. On the other hand, he
clearly didn’t move home after college, but continues living out in the world.
Those first steps I was so eager for when he was a toddler now keep moving
further away. My little boy is growing up.

Does anyone know the whereabouts of either of them? Thanks for your help.

out. I’ll let you know when I do. We will need to make the usual titanic effort
to contact AWOL classmates. If you’re willing to make a few phone calls, please
let me know. That’s one task I would prefer to shirk off. Thanks!

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">You
may recall that classmate Tom Iacono published an article in the Providence
Journal about Albert Martin, the only Rhode Islander at the Alamo. As a result,
Tom received an invitation from the RI Heritage Hall of Fame to attend the
induction ceremonies that were held to honor Captain Martin. Tom was told that
his article “influenced the board’s decision.” Tom, Nancy, his son Ellis
attended the ceremony in Providence. “It was an interesting and enjoyable
afternoon. Martin was inducted along with several other notable Rhode Islanders
from the 19th century. It was very gratifying to know that my effort to share
the story about a forgotten Rhode Island hero resulted in his being placed in
permanent recognition and honor among other greats from our state.”

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Classmate
David Lanni reports that he took his son and two of his son’s friends to Cancun
to celebrate his graduation from high school. “It was my son and his two
friends, so, as you can imagine, managing three boys in Cancun can be
challenging. We experienced Hurricane Ernesto and for two days, we had high
winds, torrential rains, and high surf. Although it took away from our vacation
time, if you have never experienced a tropical storm in the Caribbean it is
fascinating. We also went rappelling, zip lining, and swam in an underground
cave. Overall a lot of fun!”

Our 2011 40th-year Reunion was a tremendous success! People are still talking about that night: the friends they got to see and the fun they had!

Well, guess what? We're doing it again next year! As we all close in on the big 6-0 (ouch!), we're going to throw ourselves a birthday party, with 700 guests who definitely know what it feels like!

Since we got everything so right last time, we're going to duplicate it all as much as possible. Same location: Bonnet Shores Beach Club. Same month: June. Same times for bar and dinner. We're looking at Saturday, June 22, 2013 as the date for our bash.

Brodeur Combs shares her own experience with retirement: “Retirement? Let’s
see. I am a “baby” retiree, just 1 year ago, 30 Jul. At first, I didn’t know
what to expect. After working 26 years for the U.S. Army, as a Department of
the Army civilian (DAC), I retired. As I got closer to the retirement date,
maybe a month out, I applied and got accepted for a position as a Legal
Secretary, for the District Attorney’s Office. I work every other week. I am totally
enjoying it! On my “off” week, I do what I enjoy doing. Also, I have never had
a summer off in 26 years, so this is so different, yet enjoyable. I’m still in
the business world learning new things way different from the military.
However, I am enjoying my new-found life.”

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">My
son, James, graduated from BU in May. I would be proud of him anyway, but he’s
overcome some extra hurdles that make me even prouder. When he first started at
BU, he was a mechanical engineering major, a reasonable choice for a guy who’s
good at math and science. But it was tough sledding for him. At first, we put
this down to the difficulty of the engineering program at BU, and it is a
difficult program, no doubt about it. But by the middle of his second year, we
realized the real problem: James didn’t like engineering. He could do it, and
he could even make himself do it, and he could probably even make himself do it
as a job. But, my gosh, why? Why make yourself do something you don’t like, if
you don’t have to?

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">The
summer after his second year, I told him that he had to change majors, for his
own good. I suggested he look through the entire BU course catalog and find
courses he would WANT to take. He did, and they were all in one major:
Anthropology. He talked to a couple of anthro professors, liked what he heard,
and changed majors.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Now,
there’s not a lot of overlap between mechanical engineering and anthropology,
so he essentially had to cram a 4-year-major into his 2 remaining years. He somehow
did it and, despite all the work – and he was crazy busy the whole time – he loved
what he was doing and learning. His specialty is biological (aka physical)
anthropology: he’s one of those guys who can look at a 5-million-year-old skull
and tell you that the creature walked upright, ate walnuts, and was named Vinnie.
Amazing stuff.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">Not
only did he graduate, but he had a job lined up before he graduated. After
volunteering for about a year there, he landed a job at the Boston Museum of
Science. Right now, he’s helping out with their Egypt exhibit (which I saw a
couple of weeks ago: really good) and the Human Body Connection (where
my understanding is way below the ten-year-olds there). In the fall, he might
be helping them to redesign the entire Human Body Connection area.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">So,
yeah, I’m proud of James!

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">The

information on 692 classmates, which is fairly stunning. That doesn’t
necessarily mean we have email addresses for everybody, though. So if you have somebody’s

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">In
the last issue, I was wondering about classmates who have retired already. How did
they do that? What are they doing now? How are they liking it? A few people
were kind enough to respond. Here’s what they have to say:

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">“As for
retirement – I feel good about retiring from one career and starting another. Hard
to imagine 4 ½ years have passed already. It is nice to be receiving an
annuity, and I enjoy the organization I work for. There’s a lot to be said for
working in a small office. I figured the time was right to plan to retire when
I did, and life has proven me right. My organization moving to Texas did not
make me decide to retire, it just confirmed my decision.” – Joe Ricci, who
worked for the Army Materiel Command for about 30 years

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">“I retired in

new business opportunities, as I am well rested (11 years).” – Steve Wasser

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">“I am also
retired, from the Cranston YMCA, since 2008. Took up yoga as part of healthy
living and now am teaching yoga at another Y to all who are interested.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">I chose to teach
yoga since retiring: thought this might be my last time to get in better shape.
My best advice to new retirees is to be flexible, breathe, and let go...it all
comes together. Cherish family, friends, and yourself. All this is just
temporary.” – Jean Colaneri

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">“I am starting
my own business this summer. I'm 61 and it's never too late to run your own
business, or start something new. I am however still considering collecting my
social security at 62, which will be in January. My new business is "The
Wizard of Carz", and I will be going to school in Saginaw MI in June to
learn auto interior repair and paint perfection, as well as headlight
restoration (which I am already doing), and windshield repair. I am going to
have to get a van and have it lettered and all, but one step at a time.
I don't know if I would ever want to fully retire unless I win a lottery. It's
so hard to keep up with the ever increasing cost of things, etc.” – George
Alford, who retired from the Air Force, http://thewizardofcarz.vpweb.com/

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">“Since you asked
about retirement in your newsletter: I retired 6 years ago. I was a liability
manager for Aetna then Travelers. My wife Lynne, who is also retired, was a
school teacher for 30 years. I guess you could say that now I am a ski bum,
sailing bum, and motorcycle bum when I am not attending to my grandfather
duties. I also spend a lot of time helping friends with their construction
projects. The word got out that I work for vodka, so I can get pretty busy. I
got to say though, the best thing about retirement is that you own your own
time. As I said, it has been 6 years since I left my profession and I have not
had one minute of buyers’ remorse.” – Bill Collinson

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">So,
there you have several views about retirement. Anyone else have experiences to
share?

boy going to elementary school.”

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt;">I
was making a cake the other day, something that I’ve done many times. But this
time I had something on my mind I was thinking about and really wasn’t paying
attention. When I poured the batter into the cake pans, it didn’t look right.
At first I thought it was just because I had more batter in one pan than the
other. Then I zeroed in on the lumps. A lot more lumps than there should be.
And then I realized: I hadn’t actually mixed the batter. I just combined all
the ingredients and then poured it into the cake pan. Threw it all out, started
over again. Lesson: pay attention.

For her spring break this year, my daughter Katie travelled with 25 other Stonehill students to the Dominican Republic, to spend the week volunteering at a school for children of impoverished families. This school provides day-care while parents work, healthy meals, medical attention, education, and vocational training. Without the school, many of these kids wouldn’t get anything to eat all day.
Katie had fun working with the infants and one-year-olds. It was an adventure traveling to another country for the first time. She got to use her high school Spanish. She enjoyed the sunshine and the ocean. Then she got sick.
On Thursday of that week, she was weak, achy, nauseous, and had diarrhea. Was it cholera? Was it just a stomach bug? Even if it was just a stomach bug, it’s no fun trying to recuperate in a “hotel” with cockroaches, water you can’t drink, strange food, electricity that cuts out unpredictably, and prostitutes roaming the halls. My wife and I didn’t know what to do. Fly down and bring her home? Reassure her and wait for her scheduled return on Saturday? It’s a terrible feeling when someone you love is suffering thousands of miles away, and there’s not a thing you can do about it.
Thank heaven for cell phones! We could text her and occasionally speak to her. We contacted the chaperones in the group to monitor what was going on. And Katie made it home on Saturday, still feeling lousy, but basically okay. She slept for 3 days and ate cheerios for a week, but she bounced back fine.
Still, this was a reminder that this kind of thing can happen at any time. I think I’m in charge of my life, but I’m really not. People I love can suffer, and there might be nothing I can do about it. I don’t like it. I want my illusion of control back!

Sad news: Classmate Ronnie Stabile died in March. From the emails I’ve gotten, and the discussions on Facebook, and the number of classmates at the wake, I think a lot of people have heard about this already. Probably everyone in our class knew who Ronnie was. He and Mike Bellotti performed regularly – and, may I say, wonderfully – at many CHSE assemblies and shows.
It was only in February when Franne Donovan alerted me that Ronnie had been given only months to live by his doctors. I called him to offer support, but what can you say to somebody facing something like this? I didn’t know then and I don’t know now. Ronnie was stunned, as who wouldn’t be. I called back another time, and less than a week after that he was gone.
I was in the band with Ronnie, where he was in charge of the percussion and also president of the band, if memory serves me. But I only really got to know him one summer in college when we both worked at the Cranston Stadium for the summer as groundskeepers. This was a fairly grueling job, doing manual labor outside in the hot sun all day, and we also had to deal with some challenging characters: bosses who had no idea of what had to be done, co-workers who didn’t want to do anything, and local druggies and alcoholics who used the stadium as their bathroom. Ronnie was unfailingly patient and kind with everyone. He was a revelation to me. I had never seen anyone actually behave in what I can only call a Christ-like way before. But that was just the way he was. I learned so much about how to act with people from watching his example that summer. He was an inspiration to me.
When I got Franne’s email saying that Ronnie had died, I was at work. I walked out to my car and cried for ten minutes. I’m crying as I type this. He was a sweet and special guy, and I miss his being in the world.
Dave Fowler continues to train for the Boston Marathon. Monday is the big day! Here is his latest very funny blog on the subject:
http://speakerscorner-dave.blogspot.com/
Dave runs the marathon as a fund-raiser in memory of his son Nick. You can make a contribution at:
Good luck on Monday!

When Bill Dube isn’t racing electric motorcycles (www.killacycle.com/), he’s an award-winning engineer with the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Science in Boulder, Colorado. One of the things that CIRES does is monitor the air to make sure it’s healthy for people. Here’s an interesting video that describes a recent project to understand why dangerous ozone gas is building up in an isolated Utah valley:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exStZnGfBzY
I’ll let Bill describe it: “The big white box high up on the scaffolding is my design. The complicated instrument you see in the mobile lab is also my design. You can see me (wearing yellow hard-hat) in the background of the video busily working on the electrical distribution panel. I also got to run that giant blue "telehandler" to put the big white box up on that scaffold. Most definitely "big kid's toys." :-)
The uninterruptable power system in the van is also something I am proud of. It provides the 120 VAC power to all the scientific instruments in the van from the van engine, a battery bank, or a wall plug, seamlessly, with zero interruption, regardless of where the energy is coming from. Over 4 hours of "silent running" time from the battery bank so we could make measurements while parked without worries about the engine emissions interfering.”
Here’s a nice article about the research:
http://researchmatters.noaa.gov/news/Pages/utah.aspx
Way to go, Bill!

Dianne Saffron Dugan is now working at Assabet Valley Pastoral Counseling. She also does the occasional guest sermon as part of what they call “Pulpit Supply”. Her son Jeff had a difficult injury last September that he’s still recovering from. Good luck!

I find it interesting how many of our classmates are in the clergy. Besides Dianne, I know that Dean Bengtson is in Japan, still helping people from the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear power plant accident last year. Jacob Adler and Alan Mittleman are rabbis. Who am I forgetting?

Beverly Brisson DeFelice is bragging about exciting news for her sister, Barbara Brisson Hardy. Barbara has 3 daughters, and all of them are expecting this year. By the end of the year, Barbara will have seven grandchildren: 5 grandsons and 2 granddaughters. The Brissons are used to large families: they have 42 first cousins, and that’s just on their father’s side.
Celebrity watch: The daughter of one of Beverly’s many cousins is married to Guy Fieri from the Food Network.
Beverly enjoyed Tom Iacono's article, which we mentioned last month. "I am an American history buff so I really enjoyed reading that article.”

Another classmate also liked Tom’s article. “I recently was in San Antonio and the Alamo. We were following Teddy Roosevelt's path recruiting Rough Riders here. It's a sacred experience. I also found the RI'er named and felt pride seeing it. We stayed at the Menger Hotel across the street from the Alamo where Roosevelt did his recruitment. Nice article, Tom!”

I think people are aware that we have a number of honorary classmates, who attended CHSE with us but, for one reason or another, didn’t happen to graduate from CHSE. Linda Stearns Kenney, for example, moved to Warwick for her senior year and graduated there. She writes, “Anyway, destiny being what it is, I am good with life. I wanted to extend my appreciation to you and the efforts you make to form community around the group of '71. In these times, as you said, flexibility is essential! Again, want to thank you for the drive you have to bring good vibrations into your life when the frequency around the world is so chaotic.”
Welcome and glad to have you!
I didn’t really have much news, plus I was busy getting laid off yet again. That makes 3 times since last June. Yes, I have managed to land successfully at another position that’s supposed to last at least through May, but I am beginning to feel a little like a migrant worker. It’s odd to go spend months at a job, 8 hours a day, getting to know the building, getting to know the people, and then BAM! You will never be in that place or see those people again! Disorienting. Oh, I’m not complaining: I know I’m very lucky to have a job at all, much less one that pays well and involves sitting in front of a computer screen in a comfortable office, rather than digging ditches. I’m just saying it’s odd. I think people today have to be a LOT more flexible than ever before. Ready to grab the next trapeze rung at a moment’s notice.

We gained one classmate in the last 2 months, bringing the number that we think we know the whereabouts of to 653, a new maximum. High fives! As always, if you learn any classmate contact info, please share it with me.

Condolences to classmate Ed Mullen, whose father died in February.
Nice article in American Songwriter Magazine about Don Tassone’s and Art Toegemann’s involvement with the Mediator performance venue.
I always think of music as being something important in the Cranston East mix, and it’s nice to see these two alums bringing that to the community at large. Congrats, guys, on this recognition!

Dave Fowler is in training once again for this year’s Boston Marathon. Dave writes a terrific blog about his training, motivation, and the sheer insanity of it all:
http://speakerscorner-dave.blogspot.com/
One of Dave’s motivations is the charitable organization he’s established in memory of his son, Nick, called “Help in the Nick of Time”. You can learn more about it, and make a donation, here:
I love one of the runner’s t-shirts Dave mentions in his blog: “My sport is your sport’s punishment.” Good luck!
George Alford is finding a number of parts in locally produced films, including “Polypore” (by Jesse Barrack producer/director). Congratulations, and break a leg!

Franne Donovan’s and her husband Jeff Amelse’s daughter Caroline has been named to the Mortar Board national honor society at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. Congratulations to her and her proud parents! I think we can tell how smart Caroline is by the fact that she goes to college in Hawaii.

Quick! Go dig last Sunday’s Rhode Islander magazine out of the recycle bin. Tom Iacono published his account of the lone Rhode Islander at the Alamo in the March 4, 2012 issue. As mentioned in a previous slab of this update, Tom went to school in Texas, where he read about and visited the Alamo, and learned about Captain Albert Martin’s role there. If you don’t have a paper copy, here’s a link:
I can’t say I like losing a week’s pay, but it was nice to have a week off, my first since the summer of 2010. I’m not good at vacations. It takes me a few days to stop catching up on projects, and actually start having fun. It was helpful having my son and daughter home from college: they remind me how to have fun. It was pleasant actually reading a book (Agatha Christie). It was great sleeping in later than 5:30 each morning. It was relaxing to go to the gym just to sit in the hot tub. About the fourth day, I could feel my batteries recharging. I needed that!
Happy New Year!

No change in numbers whatsoever from last month. We still think we know the whereabouts of 652 of our classmates, an amazing feat after 40 years. Please let me know any contact information, especially email addresses, that you have about any classmates.

Carol Myron is also remembering influential teachers at Cranston East: “Ruth Roseman (who I had for English) and Paul Mancini were definitely two big influences. Ruth demonstrated and taught me sensitivity in life. Paul got me started in singing and I haven't stopped yet!”

Linda Rozzero Ousterhout also remembers Miss Burns: “I also would classify Miss Burns as one of my favorite teachers! She was tremendous in senior year when I took one of her review courses in order to be more successful with my SATs.”

George Alford remembers Mr. Bishop, from Metal Shop: “He was strict, but fair. I learned to weld in his shop, and built a healthy respect for shop tools. I went on to stay in the mechanical fields, first in the Navy, and then in the private sectors, taking with me much of what Mr. Bishop taught me. He didn't just teach, he connected with all of us in some way.”

Alan Mittleman also remembers Mr. Horton: “Thank you for mentioning Mr. Horton! He was without doubt the most powerful influence on my intellectual formation (a phrase that would otherwise be ludicrous) at CHSE. Without Mr. Horton, I would not have taken the various intellectual and academic paths that I did. He helped me to learn how to write, to think of writing as a craft. I owe him a great deal. I'm glad that you feel the same way.”
By the way, Alan has just published his NINTH book! You can get it here:
http://www.amazon.com/Short-History-Jewish-Ethics-Character/dp/140518941X

Nancy Goldis (Iacono) was inspired by two of her classmates: “Besides a few special teachers, I admired Jacob Adler and Monika Szynkarski more than anyone else. I was always envious of the "smart kids", and they were not only smart, but were humble, nice kids who never looked down on the kids who didn't get the great grades. I learned later in life that I was a very typical ADD kid and that was why school was so hard for me. Fortunately, I "woke up" from my learning disability and have a great life. And now Monika is my favorite travel buddy! We traveled to Costa Rica, Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and many other great places in the past few years. Next month we will go to New Orleans and from there board the cruise ship on a Mayan Mexican week adventure.
Thanks to Monika and Jacob, I always felt special in their company and will never be able to quite say thank you enough for their selfless friendship.”

A belated Reunion update from Donald Aquilante:
“Hi to all. Hope everyone out there is doing well!! Now this update: I have fully recovered from an accident I had a few days after the Reunion. I am O.K. and doing much better now!!
I enjoyed myself at the party and so did my wife of 36 years!!! She met a friend who married a classmate of ours (and a friend of mine), so we talked and had a great evening!
Now, at the Reunion I was talking to a fellow classmate. I told her of a secret that I kept all these years. Because of the accident, I cannot remember her name, or if we exchanged email addresses, or what. If she is reading this, please let’s contact each other (daquilante@cox.net). Thanks.
Nuff for now, planning for my better half’s reunion: 40 for her also. Yes, we are getting older, but better.
See you next time.”
Congratulations on your recovery!

Darlene Burdick Gnip just spotted herself in a photo someone posted on our Facebook page: “Just saw myself in 7th grade with one of the class photos.
Not in touch with anyone from high school. Have talked to a few over the years. Left R.I. soon after graduation and joined the Marine Corps. It was my way of running away from home. Met my husband in the USMC. We've been together since 1972 (married since 1974). We have 4 great kids: 2 girls, 32 and 28, and two boys, 23 and 18. Plus, two grandbabies 11 and 8. Done a lot of things since leaving the Marines. Lived in Florida for a while, then we moved to Maryland, where my husband is from. Worked at mostly state, county, and federal government jobs, except for a 10-year-career as a daycare mom after my last baby was born. Now I deliver mail for the USPS. Keeps me in shape with little time to worry about all the aches and pains that come at this age.”
Great to hear from you!

Debra Donnelly Cronin identified with the saga of dealing with a detached retina: “When I received your last email about your retina surgery, I was in the hospital also with an eye issue. I was diagnosed with retinal melanoma and the treatment is to have a radioactive plaque attached to the front of the eye. The plaque sits on your eye for five days and radiates the tumor. No one can come within 6 feet of you during this time. The plaque is then removed and hopefully after several months the tumor dies, the eyesight returns, and everything is hunky dory. Since I was in the hospital for Halloween, I dressed up like a pirate – Hey, I already had a patch on my eye! I teach 8th grade algebra – one must have a sense of humor to do that.
Well, this past weekend I suffered a retinal detachment in the same eye and on Monday had emergency retinal surgery! So here I sit, head down, typing on my iPad, looking like a monk in prayer, but I assure you it is not prayers I'm thinking.
I had to take a medical leave for the rest of the semester - can't take a chance getting jostled by several hundred 8th graders!
Tell your wife that students are researchers- they will get away with whatever they are allowed too. I started teaching at 51 years old and it took me about two years to figure that out.”
Good luck with your healings! Let us know how you’re doing.
Ellie is a psychologist, and for years she was a clinical therapist with her own private practice. She got kind of burned out listening to the problems of people who didn't make any effort to change, and she took some time off. But since September, she's been teaching 2 sections of an introductory psych course at Dean College in Franklin, MA. She enjoys interacting with the kids, but doesn't like having to be a behavior cop in the classroom, which I don’t blame her for. But I'm certainly proud of her for trying out something new. I think that they’re lucky to have her for a teacher.

We found another classmate last month, bringing the number that we think we know the whereabouts of to 652, a new maximum! Yay us! Please send me any contact information for classmates that you come across. It all helps.

Thanks to everyone who contacted me about the detached retina I suffered in October. Since the first cryogenic procedure to re-attach it, I’ve had a laser procedure on the same retina (to help keep it in place) and another retina procedure on the other retina (to prevent that one from being a copycat and detaching also). I can’t claim that this has been a lot of fun, but I do still have good vision in both eyes, and it gets better week by week. Thank heavens for modern medical technology that makes this possible! We’re all at the age where we are dealing with medical issues of all kinds. It’s nice that our class can support each other as we go through these things.

I’ve been in touch with Linda M. (Rozzero) Ousterhout. Linda lived in Mississippi for a time in the 70s, after she married her husband David, but moved back to RI in 1978. Her son David graduated from Mississippi State and is now a golf course superintendent at the Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, NH (a beautiful place!). Her daughter Maria graduated from Northeastern. Linda’s husband is the Director of Public works in Narragansett, RI. Linda has worked mainly in bookkeeping for a variety of companies in RI, including as Accounting Supervisor for South Shore Mental Health in Charlestown. They currently live in Narragansett, but intend to move to their second home in Bartlett, NH. “I enjoy the e-mail updates of our class. I have actually gotten in touch with a couple of former classmates that I have not spoken to in years.”

Mary Caldarola Smith is still in the teaching biz, working with first graders. She recently ran in the 10K part of the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC. She also plans to run a half-marathon in Orlando in February! “My kids are both in college so our house is very quiet. I like when they come home!”

Diane (Phillips) McCabe responded to the online fundraiser for the Cranston East music program. “It is good to hear that CHSE is still strong in the realm of music. One individual who deserves a huge "tip of the hat" is Paul Mancini, who was a mentor to me since I was in grade school: as a member of my school chorus, then the city chorus, and finally the CHSE chorus and acapella choir. I have come to respect his dedication to music, to those he taught, and to the Judeo-Christian content of the music we sang. Paul was never ashamed of it and allowed us to proclaim it through the music we sang.”

This brings up an interesting topic: Who at Cranston East influenced your life for the better?
For me, there were two special teachers: Mr. Horton and Miss Burns. I had Mr. Horton for English my first year at East. He passed out blank notebooks to us all and said, “Write.” I’ve been writing ever since. He was very encouraging with my first poems and stories. Thanks to him, writing has been both a career and a hobby for my entire life.
Miss Burns taught us calculus, and she did such a terrific job that, not only did I do well on the Calculus AP exam, but I also received three courses worth of math credit free in college, and I was well into my second year of college before I hit a math course that she hadn’t already taught us in high school! Not only that, but she somehow wangled for me and Paul Broomfield to attend a 3-week summer course in programming at URI, during which I learned how to program in 3 languages, which put me on the path of a lot of my later career working with computers.
I’m very lucky to have had both of these wonderful teachers. They literally changed my life.

Tom Iacono was interested in some of the RI history trivia mentioned in the last update. When Tom lived in Texas in the 80s, he read about and visited the Alamo, and noticed that there was a lone Rhode Islander listed amongst the defenders who died there. His name was Captain Albert Martin. Martin served as Col. Travis's emissary, meeting with Santa Anna's staff in a failed effort to have the two leaders meet and talk, then risking his life delivering an appeal letter for help, then returning to the Alamo with 32 more volunteers. He died at the age of 28 on March 6, 1836. “I don't know how, but his remains were returned to his birthplace and he is buried in the Old North Burial ground in Providence. Albert Martin is an American and Rhode Island hero that few, if any, Rhode Islanders know about.”
The Cranston High School East Music Department is in a national competition to receive a large sum of money, sponsored by the TV show Glee. Your part is simple: go to this web site:
http://www.gleegiveanote.com/vote_details.php?id=89
and click on the VOTE button. You can vote once a day, every day until the deadline, which is November 7. As they say in Chicago, vote early and often!

No difference in numbers from last month. We still believe we know the whereabouts of 651 classmates.

Condolences to classmate Debra (Brzoza) Abilheira, whose father died last month. (Does anyone have an email address for Debbie?)

Condolences to classmate Gene Blair, whose father died in October.

I heard from classmate Harry Law, who assures me that I have his correct email address. Harry and his girlfriend live in Bellingham, MA. Between their blended families, they have 7 kids (ages 22 to -34) and 16 grandkids (from 1.5 through 17 years old). This sounds like a family where there’s always a LOT going on.

Classmate John Dyer, though living in Florida, is steeped in Rhode Island lore to share, including:
* Actor Christopher Walken lives on Block Island.
* Actor James Woods is living in RI caring for his elderly mother. His brother ran for mayor of Warwick a few years ago. He is related to the Wood's Heating family.
* The town of Quahog in the TV show Family Guy is modeled after Cranston. So says creator Seth MacFarlane. Your children will be sooooooooo impressed when they hear that one.
* In Ken Burns' documentary film The Civil War, Elisha Hunt Rhodes lived in Pawtuxet, on Broad Street across from Sheldon Street.
Who else has some Rhode Island trivia to share?

Multitalented classmate Joe Ricci is branching out yet again. He’ll be appearing in a local (Maryland) fund-raiser show for the Harford Leadership Academy on Tuesday, November 15. Joe will be performing a tribute to Groucho Marx, including classic movie bits and a song. Let’s wish Joe best wishes for a fun night.

We are still trying to track down long-missing classmate Karen R. (Griffin) Pettis. Does anyone have any contact with Karen?
Thank you to everyone who reached out to me after my problem with a detached retina in October. I’m back to work contracting and can perform most activities fine, including going to the gym. The right eye is still challenging, kind of like looking through a rainy windshield, but it’s improving week by week. I’ll be having a preventative laser procedure on my left eye in about a month, which I’m hoping will give me super vision powers. I’ll let you know.

That’s it for me. What have you been up to? Keep us up to date, okay?
I was having trouble with the vision in my right eye: a shadow across the left side of my field of view. Concerned, I saw my optometrist, who assured me that it was nothing serious, just one of those annoying floaters. But, within a few days, the blockage had gotten bigger and moved to the center of my field of view. I asked classmate Ernie Sutcliffe, who’s an ophthalmologist, for a referral, and got another from my primary care physician. The doctor who examined me told me I had a detached retina in my right eye, and immediately sent me to their retina expert. He confirmed the diagnosis, and I had a procedure done right there to reattach the retina, using a cryogenic instrument and an injected gas bubble (you don’t want the details, believe me).
Needless to say, this was all a tad disturbing. But, by the next day, the shadow was gone and I could see objects with my right eye. It’s been 5 days now, and I am starting to be able to see ordinary screen print. The doctors anticipate that I’ll recover most of my vision. They also found that my left eye is kind of tending in the same direction, so they plan to do a laser treatment on that one to fix that retina in place so it doesn’t go anywhere.
I’m really glad that there are such treatments for such problems. Otherwise…

I still haven’t gone through the info from the Reunion (and now I finally have a good excuse), but we did locate some more people through the magic of Facebook. As a result, we now think we know the whereabouts of 651 classmates, a new record! Yay us!

I do have some sad news to report. Classmate Ken Rogers died this past weekend in Florida after a long struggle against cancer. Here is his Facebook page with a final message from him, and tributes from friends and family:
https://www.facebook.com/ken.s.rogers?sk=wall
Classmate Franne Donovan reports: “Ken Rogers's Memorial Service will be held on October 15, 2011 at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home, 659 E. Greenwich Ave, W. Warwick, RI. Visitation at 1 PM, memorial service at 2 PM, including military honors service. The Westerly Sun and the Providence Journal will have more information (Thursday edition).”
Our condolences to Ken’s friends and family.

Condolences to Gail McKenney Marsigliano on the death of her mother, Lillian McKenney.

Bruce Brailsford and his wife, Joyce, celebrated their 24th anniversary in August.
His youngest son Bill graduated from the University of Hartford this past December and is employed as a computer tech with the Branford School system.
Youngest daughter, Kelly, after nearly 3 years at UConn, decided she no longer wants to be a nurse and has transferred to the University of New Haven to become a Forensic Psychologist or something to that effect!
Oldest daughter Jaclyn is married to Roy, a Special Ed teacher at the Branford, CT High School and has a daughter Skylar who will be 3 in August and a son Cayson 6 months.
Oldest son Greg, the only one of 4 kids still in RI, just became the Senior Field Engineer with a Tech Firm in Fall River. Also, he and his wife Melissa are expecting their first child in October!
He also found this web site for the CHSE class of 1961, if you want to compare and contrast:
www.chse61.com

We’re still looking for classmate Karen Richardson Griffin Pettis, who fell off our radar a while ago. Any sightings?
Except for the Reunion in June, this has not been a fun summer for me.
I was laid off in June, as I’ve reported. My car, washing machine, and
dryer all died. My sailboat developed an unfixable crack. My son went
through all kinds of uncertainties about which friends were or were
not going to share an apartment with him in the fall. Similarly, my
daughter didn’t find out for months where on campus she would be
living or with whom. Their financial aid got cut drastically due to a
ridiculous set of rules. And I never actually took any vacation.
Mind you, it all got better. I’ve been working at a contract that
looks like it will go at least to the end of the year. We have a new
washer and dryer, and I’m leasing a new car. I gave the sailboat to
someone who can fix it and sail it. My son is settled with 3 friends
in a Brookline apartment and loves it. My daughter has a new, friendly
roommate in a dorm with A/C. And my wife is excited about her new job
teaching psychology at Dean College. So, all’s well that ends well, I
guess. Still, the highlight was definitely the Reunion!

I still haven’t gone over all the information that people returned for
the Reunion, so our count remains the same: we think we know the
whereabouts of 649 classmates. Darn good after 40 years.

But here’s something weird. A classmate has
discovered 2 classmates who haven’t been on any of our lists for, oh,
about 40 years. Karen Richardson Griffin and Donna Marie Votolato, we
owe you an apology! If anyone has any information about either of
these alumni, please let me know, and I’ll try and get in touch with
them. Thanks for the sharp eyes, and to Ernie Sutcliffe for
passing the information along.

Condolences to Gail Cavanaugh Santosuosso, whose father died in July.

Condolences to Maryann Pezza Matano, whose mother died in August.

Sherry Brodeur Combs retired after 26 years as a civilian working with
the Army in July. She has already started work as a legal secretary in
the Clayton County (GA) District Attorney's Office. “I am looking
forward to it, new people, new ideas and new goals. And I guess you
could say a new life.”

Donald Aquilante reports that he and his wife really enjoyed the
Reunion. Their daughter made the Dean’s List at Johnson and Wales
University. She’s majoring in Hotel/Hospitality Management with a
minor in Casino Gaming and Cruise Ships. Which, I’m sure, sounds more
fun than it actually is to study.
I’m impressed!

Jakki Kougasian Horan, who also makes her living as a technical
writer, reports that her youngest daughter, Maggie, graduated from
American University in May. “I was overjoyed to have her home again.
In June, she landed a job as a forensic accountant in VA, and back she
went. She told me that, during the earthquake, she had to hang onto
her desk to keep her chair from rolling around, and while she was
rocking (but not rolling), she kept thinking, ‘This can't be an
earthquake. My life just isn't that interesting.’”
Jakki recently became an instant grandmother of two, thanks to her
oldest daughter, Victoria, and Victoria’s fiancé George’s two children
(ages 10 and 6). “I had no idea that I wanted to be a grandmother, but
once it happened, I felt that same sense of something important being
filled in my heart.”
Congratulations!
More than 200 classmates and their guests enjoyed our 40th Reunion, held at Bonnet Shores Beach Club in Narragansett on June 10. For many, this was their first reunion ever or their first one in a long time, and they picked a good one to attend. The setting was – no other word will do – perfect, under a kind of pavilion, open at the sides but protected by the surrounding buildings of the club, and only 50 feet from the beach! Mad props to Dan Barry for scoring this location. The food was great. The DJ lured people to dance, not that we require a lot of luring. Name tags were definitely necessary: I recognized a lot of people who hadn’t changed much from high school, but there was a lot of “Ohmygosh, is that you?” As often happens with a class of 720, you can’t know everybody, and I got to meet and talk to many classmates for the first time, as well as reconnect with long-time friends. I walked around in a kind of happy daze, just enjoying seeing all these people reconnecting. Our class is a fun bunch of nice people, and definitely the kind to party with. More than once, I heard people say, “We should do this every year!” Sounds good to me! It was great seeing everyone!
Photos from the bash are all over Facebook, especially on our class’s page:
As I talked to people at the Reunion, I noticed, as I have so many times in the past, how many of our classmates make helping others a part of their life, whether it’s through their work, their family, or their pastimes. As a class, we have funded the Ruth P. Roseman Award since 1976 to provide small scholarships to CHSE students. The “profit” from the Reunion goes to fund this Award. We didn’t make as much profit this time around as we had hoped. If you would like to contribute a little something towards this Award, please send your tax-deductible donation to:
BTW, if you’re looking for a DJ, the one from the reunion was very good (after we asked him to turn the volume down a little – sheesh, I felt like my grandfather!). You can reach Caswell Cooke at caswellcookejr@yahoo.com.

I haven’t had a chance to go through all the returned slips that people mailed in with their checks, so I haven’t updated the class database yet. What a slug, right? So, no change in the numbers from last month. We still believe we know the whereabouts of about 649 classmates, quite a feat after 40 years.
A great article about classmate Bill Dubé and his wife Eva Håkansson (whom we met at the Reunion) and their fascination with electric motorcycles:
A number of classmates stayed at Nancy and Tom Iacono's Bed and Breakfast in Narragansett for the Reunion. You can too! Contact them at (401) 792-8264 or tomiac1@verizon.net.
As foreshadowed in earlier messages, my company did in fact sell the division I worked for and I did in fact lose my job as a technical writer early in June. With some other high school classes, this would keep a person from attending a reunion out of embarrassment that they weren’t a golden financial success. Luckily, ours has never been that kind of “my yacht is bigger than your yacht” class. When I mentioned to folks at the Reunion that I’d been laid off, everyone offered their sympathy and encouragement, and some handed me their card and said, “Call me.” That’s the kind of class we have. By the way, I’m working as a contractor while I continue with my job search. We’ve all been there, right? It will work out.
